Machine Learning & Computational Design Apparel Explorations

The following explorations are the result of a collaboration with computational design researching ways to integrate data into the knitting process with AI, ML, and CD.

Research Prompt: can you use a ML-generated graphic and integrate heat map data to create a unique visual for a knit shirt that using only only two yarns, no intarsia zones, and a combination of four knit unique structures?

I created a series of 4 compatible knit structures that varied in warmth and breathability and also had an eye-grabbing visual impact. We combined heat data and graphic inspiration into a shirt template and manipulated this image with knit software. I created 10 combinations of the 4 knit structures and assigned each a color based on the graphic. The resulting shirt prototype has zones of open breathability and fuzzy warmth and has a unique sportswear visual.
